Abstract
The publication focuses on the portrayal of the arms race in Polish caricatures published in satirical magazines “Mucha”, “Karuzela”, and “Szpilki” during the Cold War era. The author analysed 92 satirical drawings addressing this theme, which allowed capturing the conventions and visual motifs used by artists to depict the international relations of the time. It was established that regardless of the current state of international relations, the United States was consistently portrayed negatively. Concurrently, the caricatures portrayed a positive image of the Soviet Union and its dependent countries. During the analysed period, these satirical drawings created a dichotomous vision of reality, illustrating the global division into two opposing blocs of states.
